Getting Started

Features in Detail

๐Ÿด Restaurant Address & Map

The address field is optional. Tap the magnifying glass icon to open a search sheet pre-seeded with the restaurant name โ€” results come from Apple Maps. Selecting a result auto-fills both the restaurant name and address directly from the map, so the names always match. Once an address is saved, the icon changes to a map pin; tapping it opens Apple Maps to that location.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Adding People & Contact Groups

Three ways to add people:

When the bill has people on it, a teal Save as Group button appears. Tap it to name and save the current list as a new Contact Group for future reuse. Manage groups on the Groups tab.

๐ŸŽ‚ Birthday Person

Tap the Birthday pill on any person's row to flag them. You can flag multiple people.

โŠ– Exclude from Birthday Share New

Sometimes one or more people at the table don't want to chip in for the birthday person's share โ€” for example a plus-one or someone who arrived late. Tap the Exclude capsule on their row to mark them with โŠ–.

๐Ÿค– Browse Menu New

Once a restaurant name is set, tap the Browse Menu button in the Items section header. BI Splitter uses AI to look up the restaurant's menu and returns a rich item list with:

Tap items to select them (checkmark appears), then tap Add Selected to add them all to the bill at once. If the restaurant address is set, BI Splitter uses it alongside the name to fetch the correct location's menu. Menu results are cached for the session โ€” switching to a different bill or changing the restaurant name fetches fresh results, but browsing the same restaurant a second time is instant.

๐Ÿงพ Assigning Items to People

In each item row, all people on the bill are displayed as a wrapping grid of toggle buttons โ€” no horizontal scrolling needed. Tap a person's chip to add or remove them from an item's consumers. A checkmark indicates they're assigned. The cost is split equally among all assigned consumers. If no one is assigned, the item is split among all non-birthday people.

โš™๏ธ Default Tax & Tip New

Go to the Settings tab and find the Bill Defaults section. Use the steppers to set your preferred default tax percentage (0โ€“25%, in 0.5% steps) and default tip percentage (0โ€“40%, in 1% steps). Every new bill you create will start with these values pre-filled, saving you from adjusting them on every bill. You can still change the tax and tip on any individual bill at any time.

๐Ÿ“„ Professional PDF Export Updated

Tap the PDF export button to generate a two-page professional receipt:

๐Ÿ“ก Live Sync (Nearby Devices)

Everyone at the table can edit the same bill simultaneously โ€” no internet required.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the tip calculated?

By default, tip is calculated on the subtotal before tax (Pre-Tax Tip). Toggle the "Pre Tax Tip" switch in the Summary section to change this behaviour.

How is each person's share calculated?

Each person pays for the items assigned to them. If an item is shared by multiple people, its cost is split equally. Tax and tip are distributed proportionally based on each person's item total. Birthday-flagged people always pay $0 โ€” their portion is absorbed by the remaining non-excluded people.

How does Birthday Mode split the costs?

Items the birthday person consumed are redistributed to the other consumers of those same items. If an item was only ordered by birthday people, its full cost is split equally among all non-birthday, non-excluded people. The grand total of the bill is unchanged โ€” it's just redistributed.

What does "Exclude from Birthday Share" do exactly?

Marking someone with โŠ– means they only pay for the items they personally consumed โ€” they are not asked to help cover the birthday person's share. For example, if someone joined late and only had dessert, they can be excluded so they pay just for dessert while the rest of the table covers the birthday share. Excluded people's own item costs are never redistributed to others.

Can I combine Birthday and Exclude on the same bill?

Yes. Birthday people pay $0 as usual. Excluded people pay only their own items. Everyone else (neither birthday nor excluded) shares the cost of the birthday person's items. All combinations are supported โ€” including multiple birthday people and multiple excluded people on the same bill.

How does Browse Menu work?

Once a restaurant name is entered, tap Browse Menu in the Items section header. BI Splitter sends the restaurant name (and address if available) to an AI model which returns a list of likely menu items with prices, descriptions, and dietary information. Results are approximate โ€” always verify prices against the actual menu. Browse Menu requires an internet connection.

Does Browse Menu call the internet every time I open it?

No. Menu results are cached for the current session. If you open Browse Menu again for the same restaurant, the previously fetched results are reused instantly โ€” no extra API call is made. The cache is cleared when you start a new bill or change the restaurant name.

Browse Menu prices look wrong โ€” what should I do?

AI-generated menu data is a best-effort estimate and may not match current prices exactly. Always double-check against the restaurant's actual menu or your receipt. You can edit any item's price directly in the bill after adding it.

How do I set a default tax and tip percentage?

Go to the Settings tab (gear icon) and find the Bill Defaults section. Use the steppers to set your preferred tax (0โ€“25%, 0.5% steps) and tip (0โ€“40%, 1% steps). New bills will open with those values pre-filled. You can still adjust tax and tip on any individual bill at any time without affecting the default.

How does Live Sync work? Does it need the internet?

No internet required. Live Sync uses Apple's Multipeer Connectivity framework to connect nearby iPhones directly over WiFi or Bluetooth. All data stays on-device and on your local network โ€” nothing is sent to any server. Both phones must have sync active (antenna icon enabled) and be within WiFi/Bluetooth range (typically the same room).

What happens if two people edit the bill at the same time during sync?

Changes are broadcast with a short 300 ms debounce. The most recent change wins โ€” if two people edit simultaneously, the last change received by each phone becomes the shared state. For best results, take turns on large edits like adding many items at once.

How do I search for a restaurant's address?

In the Restaurant section of the Bill tab, tap the ๐Ÿ” magnifying glass icon next to the address field. A search sheet opens pre-filled with the restaurant name. Tap any result to auto-fill the restaurant name and address from Apple Maps. Once saved, tap the ๐Ÿ—บ map icon to open it in Apple Maps.

How do I save the current people on a bill as a group?

Once you've added at least one person to the bill, a teal Save as Group button appears in the People section. Tap it, give the group a name, and tap Save. The group appears in the Groups tab and is available for future bills via the indigo Add Group button.

Will adding a group duplicate people already on the bill?

No. When you add a Contact Group, anyone whose name already appears on the bill is automatically skipped. Only new names are added.

Can I share a bill with someone who doesn't have the app?

The Share Bill deep-link feature requires the recipient to also have BI Splitter installed. To share with anyone, use Export PDF instead โ€” it generates a formatted two-page receipt that can be sent via Messages, Mail, AirDrop, or any other app.

What's on each page of the exported PDF?

Page 1 shows the restaurant name and address, date, participant list (with ๐ŸŽ‚ for birthday people and โŠ– for excluded people), a formatted items table, and a totals block with subtotal, tax, tip, and grand total. Page 2 shows each person's individual share breakdown with items, tax, and tip columns, Zelle payment info (if entered), and the attached receipt photo (if any).

Why does receipt scanning sometimes miss items?

Receipt OCR works best on flat, well-lit receipts with clear printed text. Try scanning again with better lighting, or add items manually. You can also use Attach Photo to store a photo of the receipt on the bill without OCR parsing.

Where is my bill data stored?

All bill data is stored locally on your device using Core Data. It is never uploaded to any server (except restaurant name and address when using the Browse Menu feature โ€” see our Privacy Policy). Live Sync data travels only over your local network between connected devices and is never stored externally.

How do I delete a saved bill?

Go to the Saved Bills tab and swipe left on any bill to reveal the Delete option. If the list is filtered by name, deletion still correctly removes the bill from your full history.

How do I load a saved bill to edit it?

Tap any saved bill in the Saved Bills tab. It will load into the Bill tab so you can make changes and re-save it.

How do I filter saved bills by person?

Pull down on the Saved Bills list to reveal the search bar, then type a person's name. The list narrows to bills that include that person, and each row shows their individual share for that bill.

How do I see who spent the most across all bills?

Go to the Analytics tab and switch to the Top Spenders view. Each entry shows the person's total spend across all saved bills, how many bills they appeared in, and their average spend per bill.

How do I request payment from someone?

In the person's row, tap the green Request button. BI Splitter will open Zelle (if installed) pre-filled with the amount, or send a pre-written iMessage to the person's phone number.

What is the Zelle field for?

You can optionally enter a Zelle email or phone number in the People section. This information is printed on page 2 of the exported PDF so recipients know where to send payment.

How do I export all my bills?

In the Saved Bills tab, tap Export Bills in the top-left corner to download a JSON file of all your saved bills โ€” useful for backup or transferring to a new device.

How do I use Contact Groups?

Go to the Groups tab to create and manage reusable lists of people. Tap + to create a group, give it a name, and add members from your Contacts. When adding people to a bill, tap the indigo Add Group button to instantly load all members. You can also save a bill's current people as a new group using the teal Save as Group button in the Bill tab.

The app is asking for Contacts permission โ€” is that required?

No. Contacts access is entirely optional. You can always add people manually by typing their names. If you denied access and want to enable it later, go to Settings โ€บ Privacy & Security โ€บ Contacts and toggle BI Splitter on.

The app is asking for Local Network permission โ€” what is that for?

This permission is required for the Live Sync feature, which connects nearby iPhones over your local network so everyone at the table can edit the same bill. If you don't use Live Sync, this permission has no effect on the app.
